Constructing Individual Foundation

People concern themselves with the concept of popularity. According to the title of chapter 19 in Machiavelli's "the Prince" it isn't much a matter of being liked as it is, "That We Must Avoid Being Despised and Hated."

Fitness is a great asset. It is easier to get where you want to go and accomplish great things; however, accomplishments win favor. Highly successful people usually eat healthy food and maintain a regular workout. Physical attractiveness is subjective in comparison with intellectual beauty. Does anyone care if the President has broad shoulders when explaining how they are going to reform the economy? No. We want to see a change in our lives with steady employment and lower costs-of-living. Do we really care how someone's hair looks when our school team is losing? We want school pride associated to winning games. Do we really care if someone wears glasses? We want meaningful advice and correct answers.

Positive first impressions are ideal; however, when people recognize there is no substance behind the image they become fickle. Improve the mind and soul in addition to improving the surface. Machiavelli relates this concept to studying:

I conclude, therefore, that a prince need trouble little about conspiracies when the people are well disposed, but when they are hostile and hold in hatred, then he must fear everything and everybody. Well-ordered states and wise princes have studied diligently not to drive the nobles to desperation, and to satisfy the populace and keep it contented, for this is one of the most important matters that a prince has to deal with.

In the 1950's Senator Joseph McCarthy was blazing a trail to making his last name a slanderous remark, "McCarthyism." McCarthy was undereducated and outclassed by political cohorts. One day he accused someone of being a communist during the height of the Red Scare. Immediately gaining popularity needed to win an elected office and continued the pattern.

For years he accused various people of communism. Needing a bigger target to gain support he accused people in the military. The case went to court. When asked about how he knew anyone was a communist, he said he had a list of communists written on microfiche hidden in a pumpkin. Now his name is now synonymous with, "Making accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence." Fun for a long time, he made many enemies. Luckily, friends had to protect their own reputation; otherwise, it was a complete loss.

People want to be popular, yet they never look beyond appearances. Remembering the attractive people readily, thinking about it clearly, several popular people do not fit into typically "attractive" packaging. They have identifiable skills, intelligence or insights.

There is a link to exercise increasing oxygen which helps rejuvenate and create new brain cells. This may be why we associate fitness to intelligence. However, I have known many people who earned a great amount of respect though diligence and working hard; therefore, I recommend anyone seeking popularity notice popular girls are all on the Dean's list for scholastic achievement. Popular guys belong to clubs. Get busy by studying and living well, instead of, fussing with hair or making declarations of who is human companionship.
